Richard in Space

Videos and more from private astronaut Richard Garriott

Richard Garriott, famed video game developer, followed in his father’s footsteps in 2008 and launched onboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station. Richard’s father Owen Garriott is a former NASA astronaut who completed two space missions during his career. British-born, Richard was the the first second generation Astronaut in space.

He took with him a special copy of the Metro newspaper (which became the first newspaper in space) containing the winning entries of a MetroCosm competition.

The competition, run in partnership with Richard Garriott and the British National Space Centre (BNSC) was for primary school students (7-11 years old) to design experiments for Richard to carry out on the International Space Station. Richard performed those experiments onboard the ISS.
